1. 모양은 둘, 자음은 하나예요1. Two shapes form one consonant letter

쌍자음은 같은 기본 자음을 나란히 써요. 한 글자 안에서는 하나의 자음으로 쓰이며 두 번 끊어 읽지 않아요. ㄲ·ㄸ·ㅃ·ㅆ·ㅉ, 모두 다섯 개예요.A double consonant repeats a basic consonant shape. It functions as one consonant letter inside a block, not two separately spoken consonants. There are five: ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ and ㅉ.

2. 모음은 그대로, 첫 자음만 바꿔요2. Keep the vowel and change the consonant

가·까·카는 모두 ㅏ를 쓰지만 첫 자음이 ㄱ·ㄲ·ㅋ로 달라요. 쌍자음은 단지 두 배 길게 또는 크게 말하는 소리가 아니에요. 소리의 차이는 듣고 따라 하며 익혀요.가, 까 and 카 all use ㅏ, but their initial consonants are ㄱ, ㄲ and ㅋ. Double consonants are not simply longer or louder versions. Learn the sound contrast by listening and imitating.
