GRAMMAR 01 · BEGINNER · 10–15 MIN
Same place. Different message.
Goal: say where you are going, where someone is, and where an action happens. Read basic Hangeul first or use the examples as whole expressions.
This lesson covers three beginner uses. These particles have other meanings; the patterns below are not rules for every possible sentence.
1. See the difference
도서관에 가요.
도서관에 있어요.
도서관에서 공부해요.
2. Form and meaning
장소 + 에 가요
Attach 에 to a place noun when identifying the destination with this pattern. Do not put a space between the noun and particle.
학교에 가요. / 회사에 가요.
I go to school. / I go to work (the company).
장소 + 에 있어요
Use this pattern to say where a person or object is.
저는 집에 있어요. / 책이 가방에 있어요.
I am at home. / The book is in the bag.
장소 + 에서 + 행동
Use 에서 for the place of actions such as studying, eating and working.
학교에서 공부해요. / 집에서 먹어요.
I study at school. / I eat at home.
Both particles can translate as “at” or “in”. Choose from the intended meaning and sentence pattern, not from one English word. There is no different form here for nouns ending in a vowel or consonant.
A useful boundary for this lesson
Do not turn this into “every sentence with 있어요 must use 에”. Events occurring at a place and other constructions need further explanation. Here we only practise locating a person or object.
3. Choose, explain, try again
1. Complete “I go to school.”
학교___ 가요. (에 / 에서)
Answer and reason
학교에 가요.
The school is the destination, not the place where the going happens.
2. You study in a cafe. Complete the sentence.
카페___ 공부해요. (에 / 에서)
Answer and reason
카페에서 공부해요.
The cafe is where the studying happens.
3. A friend asks where you are. You are at home. Make the sentence using these parts.
집 / 에 / 있어요
One suitable answer
집에 있어요.
This locates you. To say what you do there, add a separate action sentence.
Use one place in three sentences
Choose school, a library or a cafe. Say where you are going, where you are, and what you do there. Then change the place without looking at the model.
도서관에 가요. 도서관에 있어요. 도서관에서 공부해요.
